  23. NOS was originally written for PCs by Phil Karn, a radio ham whose callsign
  24. is KA9Q (the software is often referred to as the KA9Q software). It was
  25. designed to allow hams to run AX25 (a modified version of X.25 for amateur
  26. radio) and TCP/IP over their packet radio modems. It now also supports
  27. TCP/IP over ethernet lines and serial lines, and as far as I know also
  28. has support for other protocols like Net/ROM (ham radio) and PPP.

  30. AmigaNOS is an Amiga port of it, currently maintained by John Heaton, a UK
  31. radio amateur. Its not exclusively for hams, it works very well as a
  32. general network package for PCs, Amigas, Macs etc. I've used it to
  33. connect PCs to Suns, and intend to do the same with an Amiga/Sun connection.

  40.   A great deal of people use AmigaNOS over serial lines (with or
  41. without modems) for file transfers and telnet connections. The other
  42. facilities are of limited use unless you are a ham radio operator.
  43.   I (<mcr@sandelman.ocunix.on.ca>) use it to connect my Amiga and Sun 3/60.
  44. I have an ftp login that connects me to the MSH: device. This lets me
  45. stick 720k MSDOS disks in my Amiga and transfer things (usually things
  46. I've ftp'ed at school) directly to the Sun.
  47.  
  48.   In order to make use of AmigaNOS' SLIP capabilities you need a host
  49. to connect to that is willing to do SLIP. Just having AmigaNOS doesn't
  50. get you on the Internet.

  61. There is now a modded version of AmigaNOS which will dial, and log on for you.

  63. Very useful for slip connections over a modem link.

  95. If you have a Hayse compatible modem, it can be programmed
  96. to (or not to) drop the line when DTR is dropped. Since all
  97. terminal programs release the serial device when they are existed,
  98. the DTR is droped. What you can doe is issure the command to
  99. your modem, if supported, to not drop the line when DTR is dropped.

  108. The reason that your carrier is dropped when you leave a terminal program,
  109. is that your modem is not set so that "DTR ALWAYS ON", refer to the
  110. manuals, but I imagine its a dipswitch setting...

  120. I have NOT put these into AmigaNOS, because I have no need for them on
  121. Packet Radio.

  126.   If you can ftp, look on ucsd.edu under /hamradio/packet. Look for
  127. the PC documentation, as there is little that is fundamentally
  128. changed.
  129.   /hamradio/packet/tcpip/amiga will usually have the latest binaries
  130. and source.
  131.   John Heaton also has source and binary kit available for anon-ftp
  132. available from jh.mcc.ac.uk (130.88.202.27). Unless you are on John's
  133. side of the big sink, you would be better advised to try ucsd.edu.

  164.   As said above, yes, AmigaNOS will let you do SLIP. How usefull this
  165. is uncertain. It does let you have multiple sessions, and you can do
  166. background file transfers.

  168.   No. GfxBase will not run with AmigaNOS.
  169.   There is no NFS server or client in AmigaNOS. See question 2.1.

  224. Subject: 2.1 - Does it come with a library gives you socket calls?

  226.   You can't interface GfxBase's X server because AmigaNOS does not
  227. provide any kind of standard TCP/IP library interface. Commodore
  228. hasn't really released one yet. Although they do have TCP/IP software
  229. for their network board, I don't think it does socket.library yet, and
  230. AmigaNOS doesn't talk to socket.library anyway.
  231.  
  232.   AmigaNOS is one binary and multitasks internally (but not with
  233. AmigaDOS' help). You have to remember that NOS stands for Network
  234. Operating System. On NOS' native PC environment when you remove NOS
  235. all you have is a sophisticated program loader, NOS provides
  236. everything else.
  237.  
  238.   To add a new client or server to NOS, one must recompile the whole
  239. program. On PCs, the NOS people are currently hitting the 640k crunch
  240. very hard. Fortunately, we don't have this problem.

  604. ANU NEWS is a computer-based conferencing system for VAX/VMS systems.  ANU NEWS
  605. can be connected into the Global USENET news network and/or any other news
  606. network.  ANU NEWS supports both DECnet and TCP/IP (Multinet, WIN/TCP, Ultrix
  607. Connection, EXCELAN TCP, and CMU) as transports.

  613. The purpose of news.software.anu-news is to discuss any and all ANU NEWS
  614. related issues.  It is the primary support channel for ANU NEWS users.
  615. New versions, fixes, workarounds, etc are posted to the newsgroup.  Bug
  616. reports/fixes and suggestions for improvement are always welcome.  Please
  617. always RTFM (Read The Friendly Manual) before posting.

  636. Q: How do I acquire a copy of ANU News?
  637. A: ANU News is available for anonymous FTP on sao.aarnet.edu.au (Australia)
  638.    and kuhub.cc.ukans.edu (Kansas, USA).  Other sites may also have it
  639.    available.  Please use the site closest to you.  There are two versions
  640.    available:  a normal backup saveset and a LZW compressed version of the
  641.    backup savesets.  VMS LZW programs are available on kuhub.cc.ukans.edu
  642.    also and through DECUS.  For network load reasons, it is preferable if you
